What Cheesecake Can Teach Us About Fantasy Football

Allison and I recently discovered that our local Cheesecake Factory will deliver via Door Dash. This has been a game changer for us. Seriously, it’s the best upgrade to our lives since we purchased all of our stairs. Twice a week, for the past couple of months, Allison and I have put in an order using the app. Then, thirty minutes later, our Ring Video Doorbell alerts us, and someone has hand delivered incredible cheesecake to our house.

It’s incredible.

My go to cheesecake is their Red Velvet. It combines two of my favorite flavors in the desert world, cheesecake and red food coloring.

As we’ve been doing this, Allison and I have noticed something interesting about our Cheesecake eating habits. I devour my cheesecake. Seriously, I’m first bite to finished in less than five minutes almost every time. I’ve always been a fast eater. What can I say, I’m good at eating? Meanwhile, Allison takes her time. It’s not uncommon for her to spend the better part of an hour slowly picking away at her cheesecake. Usually, she’ll eat half of it and put the other half away for another night.

I often watch her savor her slice in envy. Especially when she pulls it out the next night. Because now she’s eating cheesecake and I’m not. She’ll give me a bite or two, but her feedback to me is always the same: “You eat yours too fast, you gotta learn to ENJOY it.”

Here’s the bad news, there’s only THREE WEEKS of regular season fantasy football left. Where did the year go? It really feels like just yesterday we were drafting (late thanks to Corey). But we’ve battled now for ten weeks and have just three left to enjoy. Sure, there are the Playoffs after this. And even if you don’t make the Playoffs, you’ll be able to play in the LOSERS TABLE to have the right to pick The League Loser’s (real story I almost just typed Adam here) punishment. But by and far, we’re almost finished with Fantasy Football this year.

Like all things in life, Fantasy Football ends. And the end is approaching. It’s like an incredible cheesecake. It was delivered to us and we’ve been digging in. But soon, we’ll reach our final bite. And what then? And how do we handle the existential crisis we’re walking through now?

I would give us the same advice Allison gives me when it comes to cheesecake, learn to enjoy it. Not just fantasy football, but anything good in our lives.

The truth is, all of us are incredibly blessed. We have beyond what most people on this planet could ever dream of. All of us have good things in our lives. And it can be really easy, especially in our fast-paced consumerism culture, to always be looking for the next piece of cheesecake.

We ask ourselves things like:

·      When am I going to be able upgrade phones?

·      When am I going to get the raise or the promotion?

·      When am I going to be able to afford a bigger house (or more stairs)?

When really, we should be enjoying the good things that we have a little more before we look ahead to the next great thing. I think if we spent a little bit more time enjoying what we have not only would we be more grateful for slice of cake in our hands, maybe we’d be able to enjoy it a little longer.

I’m really working on this when it comes to this Fantasy Football season. Every time I set my line up, I’m thankful for the fact that I get to do it. Because everything in life ends. And when this season does I want to look back having enjoyed it as much as possible.
